WHAT IS STRESS URINARY INCONTINENCE?

Stress urinary incontinence is the leakage of urine during moments of physical activity which increases abdominal pressure, such as coughing, sneezing, laughing, or exercise. Stress urinary incontinence is the most common type of urinary incontinence in women.

WHAT CAUSES STRESS URINARY INCONTINENCE?

Stress incontinence is usually the result of the weakening of, or damage to, the muscles used to prevent urination, such as the pelvic floor muscles and the urethral sphincter. This weakening can be caused by vaginal atrophy, childbirth, and aging.

WHAT ARE SOME CONTRIBUTING FACTORS?

Other factors that may worsen stress incontinence include:
• Chronic coughing.
• Illnesses that cause chronic coughing
• Smoking (causes frequent coughing).
• Obesity – excess weight increases pressure on the abdominal and pelvic organs.
• High impact activities (for the pelvic floor) over many years, such as running or jumping.
• Age – physical changes that can occur over time.
• Vaginal childbirth delivery – especially with forceps.
• Previous pelvic surgery such as a hysterectomy

WHAT IS THE ROOT CAUSE OF STRESS URINARY INCONTINENCE?

The root cause, and main contributing factor for stress urinary incontinence is vaginal atrophy! Take a look at the following illustrations to better understand the problem!
Normal Female Anatomy
Here is what the normal vaginal canal and mucosa look like. As you can see the vaginal lining is thick and plump. Notice where the bladder sits in relation to the vaginal canal! The bladder is upright and the urethra in straight and not kinked!
Female Vaginal Atrophy
Here is what it looks like when the lining gets thin! Notice as the vaginal lining thins and shrinks, the vaginal canal losses substance and girth! This is from loss of collagen and elastin over time, exacerbated by childbirth! Now notice what happens to the bladder. It falls with the shrinking vaginal canal, kinking the urethra. This makes it difficult to control your urine and leads to stress urinary incontinence!
